Rock Legend: Tommy Shaw
Tommy Roland Shaw is the youngest of four children. He was
born on September 11, 1953 in Montgomery. When he was
only ten years old, his parents gave him a guitar and that
fact certainly molded his life from then on.
After leaving high school, Tommy took part in a band that
was called M. S. Funk.But sadly, three years later the band
broke up because they didn't have enough money. Also,
working since the disco era did not spare them at all.
He went back to Montgomery by the year of 1975 and then he
joined another band with some of his oldest friends. At that
moment he began writing his own songs and the theme
"
Crystal Ball" turned into a classic in the city of Quebec,
Canada.
During the same year, while getting ready to go on the tour
called Equinox, one of the guitarists of STYX left the band
and Tommy was called to take part on it. He went on an
amazing adventure with Dennis De Young, James Young and
Chuck and John Panozzo. Some time later he was going to
become one of the band leaders.
Tommy made an audition and he succeeded. As a result, he
became the new member of the band and he even got to be
one of its leaders. STYX was a popular band on the late
Seventies and the early Eighties. Originally it was known as
"
The Tradewinds".
In 1981 he took part in the biggest tour of
STYX, "Paradise
Theatre", and the band traveled around the world. The
release of "Kilroy Was Here" in 1983 was rather a
disappointment. Tommy was not entirely pleased with the
whole conceptual album because he was asked to write songs
on precise topics.Soon after the tour, he was determined to
leave the band and went forward with his own attempt to go
on with music. For a short period, he worked with Ted
Nudgent and Damn Yankees.
In 1984 he released his first solo album, "Girls With Guns",
which was well received by Montreal critics. The album even
made it to the Top 20 of the music charts in Quebec. After
his first album without the band, he recorder "What If" and
"
Ambition" followed, but sadly did not get much recognition
neither in Quebec nor in Canada in general.
By the year 2000 the band STYX got back together again. In
that year, they began the new millennium making great music.
