Msvcirt.dll file is linked to missing export msvcrt.dll : ??_u@yapaxi@z

After installing Rebirth on my Windows 98 SE computer I suddenly could not open Native Instruments Reaktor (and possibly other programs). It gave the following error message: "Msvcirt.dll file is linked to missing export msvcrt.dll : ??_u@yapaxi@z "

This was familair and I found a Microsft tech doc that had a solution (below). Only problem is that my System File checker dialog box it did NOT have the EXTRACT file option as the doc said it would... SO after research I finally figured out how to accomplish the same thing in 98 SE...

To extract system files from your installation disks...

Go to any folder and select HELP TOPICS from the help menu and then search for "extract files"

Double click "To extract system files from your install..." option and a window will open with a link to SYSTEM FILE CHECKER.

Select Extract one file from installation disk and one at a time enter the name of both of those files that need to be replaced... Msvcrt.dll and Msvcirt.dll... It'll walk you through it... In my case I had set up the system so that the installation disk was on my c drive so I did not have to insert the install cd-rom.

After replacing those 2 files and a restart everything worked for me....

Windows instructions (did not work on SE for me, but may work on 98 for you???)

Start System File Checker.
Click Extract one file from installation disk.
Type the name of the file in File to extract, or click Browse.
Click Start.
In Restore From, type the name of the folder where the .cab files are located on your installation disk.
If necessary, change the path in Save file in.

Click OK.

Windows 98
Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type SFC, and then click OK.

In the System File Checker dialog box that appears, click Extract one file from installation disk.

In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type Msvcrt.dll, and then click Start.

In the Restore from box, browse to your Windows 98 installation CD.

NOTE: If you have an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) installation of Windows 98, the Windows installation files may be stored in the following location:

In the Save file in box, type C:\, and then click OK. You receive the following message:
Extract File

The file has been successfully extracted.
Click OK.

Repeat steps 3 through 6 but substitute Msvcirt.dll for Msvcrt.dll.

Quit System File Checker, and then restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.

At the command prompt, type Rename C:\Windows\System\Msvcrt.dll Msvcrt.old, and then press ENTER.

Type Rename C:\Windows\System\Msvcirt.dll Msvcirt.old, and then press ENTER.

Type Copy C:\Msvcrt.dll C:\Windows\System, and then press ENTER.

Type Copy C:\Msvcirt.dll C:\Windows\System, and then press ENTER.

Restart the computer.
