This sound ROM was somewhat
of a disappointment. It didn't have PUNCH, seemed somewhat cliche and
just lacked that OOMPH we were looking for. That said, it does have
a good selection of standard type sounds you can add to your arsenal
of sounds but beware of the less than optimal sound quality.
For some reason the
sounds on this rom are wimpy and weak - as in punch and volume level
(couldn't the samples have beennormalized???). We tried to use them
together with XL-1 patches in tandem on different channels and the Protozoa
patches would simply all but disappear. We'd have to drop down the volume
significantly on the XL-1 patches just to be able to HEAR the Protozoa
sounds.
Part of this can be
attributed to the fact that these are from older sound libraries and
simply are not recorded and processed as well. Also we noted that many
of the presets on this rom only contain 1 layer of "instrumets"
while the XL-1 for example almost always utilizes all 4 layers of instrument
sounds.

If you have the empty
slot available and a few extra bucks burning a hole in your pocket we
say OK, go ahead - get it... BUT if you are like us and don't have the
free slots (yet) you may wanna look at the TECHNO
SYNTH CONSTRUCTION YARD instead. Our Xtreme Lead-1 module only had
1 extra slot, so we had to remove the Protozoa to make room for the
TECHNO SYNTH rom. When we get the expander, we'll drop it in, but so
far we haven't missed it.
Before buying this one
we'd suggest giving it a listen at your local music gear dealer.
